Victorian Mosaic Tiling

External and Internal – Garden Paths, Porches and Hallways

The London Front Garden Company supplies and lays ‘Victorian’ Mosaic Tiling for garden paths and porches, often as part of our complete garden design service.

We also restore and replace Victorian mosaic floors in halls and passages across London.

Because we specialise in garden and interior tiling for period properties, we are experts in the field.

Whether you are replacing your old path or hallway with a copy of the original, or would like to make a change with a traditional ‘twist’, we can help.

Geometric and Encaustic Tiling for that Period Finish

Whatever your requirements, we have the knowledge, skills and experience to reproduce a whole range of wonderful mosaic patterns, from the classic ‘black and white chequerboard’ geometric pattern of our logo to incredibly complex ‘box and star’ masterpieces containing patterned, or encaustic, tiles.

Geometric tiling was a huge trend in what we now call 'period properties', especially those built during Victorian and Georgian times.  Although incredibly hard wearing, they also became a symbol of social standing, with some designs comprising as many as 600 tiles per square metre.

Many London homes still sport these tiles, but the vast majority have now become damaged, tired or in a state of disrepair. Many of our customers want to revitalise their homes or gardens and restore them to their former glory.

Take a look at our gallery below to see some of our tiling craftsmanship.

Craftsmanship & Materials

What makes our mosaic tiling design and fitting services the best in the business is our persistent desire to offer the best craftsmanship possible.

Our skilled tilers have thousands of hours of experience between them, have an incredible attention to detail and aim to be perfectionists in what they do.

Our work is built to last. We are agents for Original Style and Olde English Victorian Tiles manufacturers so you can be sure the materials used are the best available. All modern tiles are made in a similar way to the original Victorian mosaic tiles and are heat treated to be weather, scratch and stain resistant - which makes them suitable for all areas, from the garden to the kitchen.

Every path and hall is created by hand, laying each tile individually.

Equally important is the integrity of the footings – the base – and we take great care to ensure these are extremely strong, stable and absolutely flat.

We approached this Company after sighting their previous works when we were thinking of re-planning our front garden with a black and white Victorian path. We knew exactly what we wanted and Chris Martin was most attentive and very helpful to the detail we required, and with his experience adding input which was constructive. His team were both flexible and knowledgeable in their specialized fields and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them.

Fantastic job on our front garden. Excellent recommendations from consultant Byron & the master tiler Lucien. Quick, professional and really a work of art, Lucien did an amazing job of matching the pattern we wanted to an awkward, misaligned space. He took pride in making it look right and we love it - Highly recommend.

We worked with the London Front Garden Company to take our front garden back closer to how it would have originally looked. In addition to the work rebuilding the steps and garden which the company does so well, Chris also sourced reclaimed titles which matched the originals and was able to rebuild the front wall using coping stones cut specifically to match what would have originally been there. Although there were periods were the work was a little slow (especially during the cold, long winter) we decided to relax and trust Chris and his team to get the job done as the various different bits of work came together. Ultimately it was pain free process and we are very happy with the results. Thank you Chris and team.

I have attempted to contact this company on two separate occasions 8 months apart to get an outline quote or at least further information about Victorian wall railings and a restoration project for our home address. Whilst I appreciate Covid has had detrimental effects on business, I don't think any business should be above dignifiying enquiries with a personalised reply or offering an answer to a simple question. Instead I have received identical (possibly automated) dismissive replies. Poor customer service guys.Update March '22: The company's owner Chris got in touch, was very cordial and professional and provided relevant advice. He apologised for the lack of reply to both requests and admitted shortcomings in that process. At no time did he ask for this review to be edited, but I think the proactive response and subsequent product advice warrants it. Thanks Chris.

London Front Garden Company reinstated my Victorian front path, porch floor, front garden wall and Hever Estate style iron work and gate. Great care was taken to get the style of tiles correct and then reproduced. The brick work on the front wall was Flemish bond and the coping stones reinstated to match the originals. Excellent workmanship and it’s been a joy to walk on my front path for the last six years. I contacted them again this year as my front stone step had been damaged by Council workmen whilst reinstating the public footpath. Byron came out to look and then sent Luci, who had done the original work, to do the repairs. He spent the morning working to expertly repair the step at no cost to me. How amazing is that? I can highly recommend their workmanship, attention to detail and professionalism.

We used the London Front Garden Company to restore our Victorian front garden back to how it would have been originally. The wrought-iron railings and garden gate were replaced along with a new york stone step to the entrance of the garden and in the porch. A fabulous new mosaic path was laid by hand, each tile placed individually- this is probably my favourite feature of the project. I would highly recommend this company for their attention to detail, advice and workmenship.

We searched for several months for a company that we could trust to do our front garden to a high standard and Chris and his team absolutely delivered that. We have a period house and therefore wanted something in keeping with its style. Chris (the owner) took the time to understand what we wanted and made really good planting recommendations (given that we are not plant experts!). His team did a great job and were very professional. Chris did such a great job on our front garden that our next door neighbour got him to redo theirs! I would highly recommend Chris and his company to friends and family.

We are delighted with our new steps and paving. We had good and helpful contact with Chris when he made site visits, but Luci was the star of the work. He is a true craftsman and he really cared about getting the steps and the rain run off just right. He worked so hard, in sun and rain and has done a beautiful job.
