At The London Front Garden Company, we pride ourselves on installing high-quality stone steps and natural stone paving that look great and add to the value of your home.

As experts in landscaping and stonework, we know that while natural stone is durable and timeless, it requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. Natural stone will weather and develop a patina over time, enhancing its charm. This article is designed to help you manage this process, ensuring it adds to the stone’s beauty rather than detracts from it.

Sealing Natural Stone

Sawn limestones and sandstones (including Portland stone and Yorkstone) are highly porous and prone to staining and frost damage if unsealed. As part of our services at The London Front Garden Company, we apply high-quality sealants to protect your stone surfaces. It is important to understand, though, that while sealing helps preserve the stone, it will not prevent natural weathering.

Routine Cleaning

Regular cleaning is key to preserving the appearance of your stone steps and paving. By following these simple steps, you can prevent dirt, moss, and algae from taking hold:

  1. Sweep Frequently – Use a stiff-bristled brush to sweep away leaves, dirt, and debris. This prevents organic material from decomposing and causing stains. Wet leaves, in particular, can stain the surface if left for long periods.
  2. Wash with pH-Neutral Cleaners – A mixture of warm water and mild, pH-neutral detergent (even a bit of washing-up liquid) works wonders. Scrub the surface gently and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the stone, especially limestone.
  3. Address Stains Promptly – Dirt and stains must be removed as soon as possible. Organic matter breaks down and can be absorbed into the pores of the stone, making removal difficult. Wet leaves left on paving can stain slabs. Once ingrained, stains require more than a brush and wash-down to remove. Regular cleaning is crucial.
  4. Jet-Washing – Jet-washing is an effective way to refresh the look of stone surfaces, but it must be done carefully to avoid damage:
  • Use a Low to Medium Pressure Setting – High-pressure jets can erode the stone or dislodge mortar joints.
  • Keep a Safe Distance – Maintain at least 30 cm between the nozzle and the stone to prevent surface damage.
  • Even Coverage – Sweep the jet-washer across the surface evenly to avoid streaks or patches.
  • Beware – Over-reliance on jet-washing can lead to long-term surface erosion. Use sparingly and rely on regular brushing and gentle washing for routine maintenance.

Alternatively, a gentle hose and soft brush can effectively clean without the risks of high-pressure washing.

Managing Seasonal Care

Natural stone is affected by seasonal changes. Here are additional measures to protect your stone all year-round:

  • Avoid Salt for De-icing – Salt erodes stone surfaces and causes cracks. Use sand or salt-free de-icers instead.
  • Ensure Proper Drainage – Pooling water promotes moss and algae growth. We will have ensured that water runs off both steps and paving, but make sure any drainage channels are kept  clear.
  • Move Furniture and Pots – Relocate furniture and pots periodically to prevent moisture build-up and algae growth beneath them.

By incorporating these practices into your maintenance routine, you can significantly enhance the durability and appearance of your natural stone steps and paving.
